Among the complexities evoked by the growing tent city phenomenon is the conflict between the fluctuating impermanence of its own materiality with the attempt to embody the psychological security and stability of the American Home. By employing a strategy of sewing (which is usually confined to the domestic sphere), Montana Torrey's "Tent City" investigates this relationship between homelessness and the materials that create temporary, makeshift housing and the collective fear of losing one's own home. For the 13th Annual D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival, Montana Torrey will install "Tent City", a hand-sewn/painted interactive installation composed of a variety of rudimentary shelters.
